This one’s for the girls. Sorry fellas, this blog is all period talk. I talk to so many women who have problems with their periods. Whether it be major PMS symptoms, hating their hormonal birth control, the list is endless when it comes to Aunt Flo. So I have created a list of tips and products that I use during my time of the month that helps.
Period Hacks & Products to Ease Aunt Flo
First, I don’t use hormonal birth control. I’ve been there, done that, and it did not work out well for me. I went on the pill at 16 because of heavy periods and cramps and continued the use until I was 26. I gained weight, had major cravings, and my sex drive was next to nothing. Luckily, I didn’t have any problems when I went off the pill and my period was back to normal within 3 months.
The birth control I started using and have been very impressed with is an app called Natural Cycles. It was developed by women and your cycle is tracked by taking your temperature with a basal thermometer. I take it every morning before I get out of bed. Then I add my temperature to the app and it tells me if it’s a green day or a red day (when I need to use protection). I highly recommend this option if you are wanting to go off hormonal birth control. To learn more about it click here.
I think as women it is important that we educate ourselves about our bodies. We need to understand our cycles and why our bodies do what they do during certain times. If you would like to further educate yourself on this subject, here is a great book to read. It’s less than $20 and is a wealth of information.
The list of products I use during and around my period:
This is an herbal supplement I take every day to help balance my hormones and decrease PMS. I love it because it’s all natural, it’s affordable, and it works! I have always had major cramps during my period and ever since I started taking Flow Balance, my cramps have almost completely stopped. It’s by a brand called Organic Olivia, she is an herbalist and she knows her stuff! I use multiple products from her line. If you are wanting a little extra boost to help balance your hormones, I suggest using the Liver Juice product as well.
I have an entire post about this amazing product line so go check it our here
I have discussed in a previous blog about how I use a menstrual cup during most of my period. I will occasionally use tampons but for the most part I use this chemical free cup. It is less waste, you can wear it way longer than tampons, and you don’t have to worry about toxic shock syndrome.
This is the best essential oil roll-on during your period. I’ve tried several different ones and this is my favorite. It helps balance your mood, makes you feel more calm, and relieves cramps. I roll it behind my ears, on the bottom of my feet before bed, and on my stomach around my uterus.
If I do use tampons, these are the best. Did you know that the average tampon contains at least three different kinds of chemicals? And we are sticking those chemicals right up into our bodies. With the Seventh Generation tampons, I don’t have to worry about that because they are fragrance and dye free and the applicator is plant based and organic.
I never thought I’d be the period panty type, but I am hooked. I still use my menstrual cup or tampons when I have the underwear on but they are great if you are worried about leakage. Anf I like to use them if I want to wear something light colored and during the night to prevent sheet stains. They are a life saver!
I can’t take credit for this amazing recipe. Liz Moody created this one and she did an amazing job. Every ingredient used is to help your period in a specific way, including the dreaded bloat. She goes into detail on her website about what the ingredients are used for. I made my batch without chocolate because I’m allergic but they are still delicious!
We all need a little help with our skin on the days the crimson tide is present. Well this mask sure does the trick. I draw a bubble bath, slap on this mask, and let it do some amazing work to my skin. My skin is always dull when I’m on my period. Can you relate? So not only does this mask relax me but it helps my PMS acne and brightens my skin! If you want to try it out for yourself, click the link above and use the code HEALTHYHIPPIE for 10% off!
