In Season Eating

We’ve all heard at one point or another that eating foods that are in season are better, but do you know why? Well, lets start with the obvious reason, the food is more fresh. When you eat foods that are in season, there is a better chance that the food hasn’t been picked early in order to be shipped and distributed at the grocery stores. So it is more likely that the food you buy will be more fresh. And will have been grown and ripened properly.

When food is ripened correctly before picking, it will taste better and have more nutrients. So it’s healthier, which we highly approve of here at the healthy hippie! Antioxidants in food decreases the longer it is stored, so you want to be able to get the foods full nutritional value if possible.

Another great reason for eating in season produce is that is cheaper, yes please!

When large portions of produce are being harvested because of the food being is season, the cost will decrease. The reason for this is because the produce will travel a smaller distance to get to the distributor or the farmer is selling the produce personally.

Which comes to my next point. If you are eating in season food, you will have more options to buy locally which is cheaper, tastes better, it’s more nutritious, and it’s organic.

Everyone in the health world is constantly talking about how eating organic is so important and it definitely is but it can also be expensive. If you buy in-season and local, it already ensures that it will be organic and it’s cheaper. So it’s a win win all around. Try shopping at a local farmers market or check at your local grocery store for the “local” stamped produce.

This may pose another question. “How do I know what foods are in season to buy?”

So I have a tip for you that will make your shopping for in season food SO MUCH EASIER. It’s called seasonalfoodguide.org. All you have to do is put the state you live in and the time of month and it will bring up a list of the best foods to eat for your area. You can also download the seasonal food guide app as well. I am not affiliated with this company. I just want to make it as easy as possible to find in season food. And I have found that this is the easiest way. So I hope you will give seasonal eating a try. You will be surprised at how much better your food tastes!
