Sorry gents, this subject isn’t for you today because I will be talking about that dreaded time of the month. As women, we appreciate the fact that we have our period so we can one day or already have children. However, that doesn’t make it any easier when we get a visit from the crimson tide. Let’s be honest, there are no fluffy words to explain having your period. The whole week is just a mess. There is good news though; there are ways to help the dreaded PMS during your time of the month.
The Best Foods to Eat on Your Period
Of course the ways to help your PMS have to do with the food you ingest because well duh, everything we talk about around here has to do with food. When we have our period, we loose certain nutrients from the body. The two main nutrients that decrease during a cycle are zinc and iron. So it is important that they are replaced back to the body in the form of food. It is the best way to ensure your period is as comfortable as possible.
Some great foods to help replenish your zinc and iron are wild caught sustainable seafood and dark leafy greens like kelp, nori, bok choy, kale, and broccoli.
Good options for seafood would be salmon, tuna, oysters, clams, and mussels.
These fish and shellfish have a large amount of nutrients. Don’t go and eat tilapia. This is not the type of seafood that will replenish your iron and zinc. Sometimes I don’t feel like a big filet of fish during my period but I love to get good fresh sushi with ahi tuna.
Soups are a great way to get in your leafy greens.
I like to add a bunch of greens to bone broth. Soup is soothing when you don’t feel the greatest and the bone broth is great for your gut.
The dreaded bloat is another occurring issue during the time of the month.
Some great ways to help diminish the bloat are to eat foods high in fiber. Fiber is great for digestion and if your digestion is good then you will be less likely to bloat. Foods that will help this are blackberries, chia seeds, almonds, and sweet potato. And of course let’s not forget about the food that every woman loves (except for me) and that is dark chocolate. That’s right; it’s actually a good thing to eat dark chocolate during your period. Just make sure you are eating a high quality chocolate to get maximum results. Some good brands of high quality chocolate are Loving Earth and Hu.
I hope these tips help you as much as they have helped me during my period. We should love our bodies and therefore, replenish it with good sustainable foods that help us thrive. #womanpower
