Staying Healthy During Summertime Travels

Summertime is all about soaking up those sun rays, eating great food, and traveling. I don’t know about you, but when I travel it can be much harder to stay on track with my healthy lifestyle. When I am at home, it is easy to stay on track because I cook the food I have at home. However, there are so many options to choose from when traveling. If you are like me and don’t take a healthy snack during your travels, you get so hangry, yes I meant hangry, that you will eat whatever you can find.

Staying Healthy During Summertime Travels

When my husband and I were traveling for our honeymoon, I forgot to pack snacks for the plane ride. We were going off about 4 hours of sleep. I had a hard time finding anything decent to eat at the airport because our morning flight was so early. By the time we were halfway through our flight, I was so hungry I would have eaten anything that was put in front of me. So the lovely flight attendant offered me cookies and what did I do? I ATE THEM ALL, UGH. It wasn’t long that I felt worse than before I ate the cookies because they contained gluten. Lesson learned guys, always pack snacks. To prevent this terrible instance from happening, I have a few tips. These might prevent you from getting to the dreaded and ashamed hangry state.

Always, always plan ahead. If you don’t plan ahead before you begin your travels, you will end up starving like me on several occasions. Buy healthy snacks that you enjoy eating on a regular basis and make sure they are packed in a bag that you have easy access to. Become aware of your traveling schedule before you leave so that you can pack snacks to eat during your trip as well. I like to pack several snacks that I have easy access to while I am on my way to my destination and then pack separate snacks to eat during my stay.

Another good tip is to research the grocery stores close to where you are staying so if you want to purchase items that do not travel well, you can buy them when you get there. I always try to find a whole foods or fresh market close to where I am staying. However, if there isn’t a health food store close to where I am staying, I will pack as much as possible and buy items like organic lettuce, lemons etc, at a regular grocery store.

Some of the items I travel with:

  • Nut butter (you can find individual packs at most health food stores. These travel better than a whole jar of nut butter)
  • Healthy snacks like plantain chips, Siete tortilla chips, protein bars
  • My special herb blend for salads – you can get the recipe here
  • Gluten free bread
  • Protein powder & probiotic supplements

Sometimes I travel with more, sometimes with less, depending on where I go. Planning is key people. Do not end up like me, getting hangry and eating all the cookies.
